A Photo a Day - Week 1

I take lots of pictures and try to keep my scrapbooks updated, but I get tired of taking pictures of the same events year in and year out.  In 2013, I took a Photo-A-Day Challenge through fatmumslim.  Chantelle would give a photo prompt for the day and then I would just try to capture what I thought the prompt/word to be.

It was quite fun and definitely challenging. Somedays, I would change the photo to fit my needs. I did really well until about October and for some reason just couldn't keep up.  I got back on track mid November and finished the year strong.

This year, I decided to take the challenge again!!

Here is an example of what the photo prompts are.

I love seeing my life through a different lens.  I will try to share my daily photos each week this year!!  Stay tuned!!

40th Birthday Bash

Five years ago, I was celebrating my 35th birthday with my best friend.  We had just had a wonderful lunch and were in the middle of our pedicures, when I got a phone call from my sister.  When I answered the phone, it wasn't my sister, but her boss.  I immediately knew something was terribly wrong.  I had talked to my sister earlier in the day, she had wished me happy birthday and she told me how excited she was to go on their first family vacation the next week.

Kim tries to tell me there has been an accident, my sister and niece are okay, but Dan wasn't.  I don't remember a whole lot about that conversation, because I think I had started to go into shock.  Kim tells me to get to my sister as quickly as possible.    I remember talking with each of my parents and throwing whatever I could in a suitcase.  Before we even left Kansas City,  I received word, that my brother-in-law was dead.

My brother-in-law, Dan, was at training for his SRT team with his police department and was accidentally shot with a live round by another police officer.  He was gone within moments.  The ride to get to my sister was excoriating.   The entire drive, I was screaming and crying, on the phone with other family members, trying to process what had happened.  I just wanted to get to my sister,  I needed to hold her, I needed to touch her face, and hear her voice. The events of that day, still haunt my thoughts and dreams.

My birthday, has been very difficult for me to celebrate these past five years.  No matter what my friends and family would do to celebrate me, I struggled with being happy, with being joyful.  At some point in the day, I would just break down.  I would want to be left alone to cry, to mourn, and to  relive September 15, 2010.

Since then, each September, I post a blessing each day.  A friend suggested this as a way to help me think about what wonderful and beautiful things I DO have in my life.  I've been doing this for five years and I am blown away each year what God is doing in my life.  Some days, some years, it's been a challenge.  There have definitely been days I don't want to be grateful for anything.

Time does help heal wounds, but scars can still remain.

This year, I wanted to celebrate BIG!!  I wanted to celebrate this milestone of 40 years and I wanted to celebrate those in my life who love me and have been with me through life's struggles.  I wanted it to be a fun event, but I decided I wanted to do a party with a purpose.  One of the items on my list for 2015, was to do something for charity.

At the suggestion of another friend, I started looking for a ministry that had something that my friends could physically participate in making at my party.  I found this amazing little ministry called Sole Hope.  I stumbled upon it one day while searching the internet.  I loved the simplicity of the ministry and I also loved that it had the word HOPE in the name.  Hope has a been a big part of my story these last five years - hope that there was some purpose in this tragedy, hope that there was a little girl out there for our family, and hope that I would be a vessel to be used by God no matter what!!

I asked a few of girlfriends to help me plan and prep, and they showed up in an AMAZING way!!

Jenelle and I collaborated on decor.  It was a lot of fun to share ideas via Pinterest and then see what we had on hand to make it happen.  We have very similar tastes and like to do things as cheap as possible.  We pretty much had most of what she wanted to end up using on hand.   Lots of polka dots, craft paper, and black and white.

Katie took care of the drinks for me.  I gave her a few ideas for some mocktails, but gave her free reign to do whatever she wanted to do!!

She ended up bringing some Sprite and lemonade and have few add ins like rock candy in pink, white, and black, and GINORMOUS blackberries.  We served them in fun mason jars and frap bottles with cute straws.

Alex and Tree took over the Sole Hope table for.  They manned the table, told guests about the ministry, and collected money to pay for each pair of shoes we cut out.  We ended up with 40 pairs of shoes, which was my goal!!

My mother-in-law made some amazing cupcakes!!  We also had a popcorn bar, chocolate covered pretzels, and Katie made her famous Oreo truffles!!

My mom and my friend, Karen were the paparazzi for the night - they took photos for me with each of my guests and just captured moments I wouldn't have been able to.

I really was a lovely evening.  It was great to catch up with everyone and to just CELEBRATE!!  I went to bed with a BIG ole' smile on my face and a cupcake underneath my pillow!!

Sunday Style- Basic Black

I picked up this basic black dress at my local Salvation Army Family Thrift Store last winter and I love a classic LBD (little black dress).  This dress is the perfect length for my tall frame, has a simple silhouette, can be worn year around, and has pockets!!

I paired my dress with a thin black belt, black patterned tights, and black boots.  Then, I threw on a fun vintage necklace I picked up for just $4 at a local thrift store.  The necklace is unique and is a gorgeous statement necklace.

I also added my "new"vintage coat that I am kind of obsessed with!!  It just makes be feel like Audrey Hepburn or Judy Garland.  I've always loved old Hollywood and it so I am stoked when I can find a piece of vintage for next to nothing and feel like a million bucks!!

I tried to style my hair a bit different as well.  I just simply brushed my hair back and sprayed it till it stayed where I wanted it to with hairspray!!  Not sure if you can see that I did anything different!!

I usually try to take my Sunday Style pictures before church, but some days I have to wait till after church and then the sun is SOOOOOO bright.  That's what happened with these pictures, I need to work on my editing and photography skills in this area!!

From head to toe, my outfit cost right around $30!!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Paparazzi

I have loved photography for many years and taken little photo sessions here and there of my family, but never taken any for hire!!  I was approached by two friends to see if I would take senior pictures for their children.  I told them I would do my best!

I did Aaron's photo shoot at a little park close by.  I asked him and his mother, Carolyn, to give me some ideas of what kinds of photos they would like and they gave me a great starting point.  Aaron is an amazing musician and loves playing his guitar, so we had to be sure to capture him with his guitar.  The weather and lighting was perfect!!  I enjoyed getting to know Aaron a bit more and capturing some fun pictures!!

I don't like editing photos.  I try to do as much editing of my shots, when I am taking the photo.  I actually was able to sort and edit Aaron's photos in less than 45 minutes!!

My neighbor, Kim, asked me if I would take her daughter Joy's senior pictures.  I have known Joy since she was 2 years old when we moved in next door.  It has been so fun to watch her and her siblings grow up.  They have been incredible neighbors, friends, and playmates for my kids.

Joy had a very specific idea on what she wanted her senior pictures to look like, and I was a little scared!!  Her vision included WATER!!  She found a beautiful stream that was a perfect location to capture her beauty!!

Joy and I took our time and had a great time trying to make her vision come to life.   The lighting, water, and subject were perfect.  Joy was easy to coach and she was ready to take the plunge.  Thankfully it was a warm fall day!!  The hardest part for me was having to get wet myself, I wasn't quite dressed for that!

My favorite part of this photo shoot, was watching Joy emerging from a sort of cocoon.  She was quite timid at first, but the more she got wet, the more she opened up and blossomed.  It was mesmerizing to watch her whole demeanor change.  I think we were both sad when we were done!!

Sunday Style - A Little Shine

It is rare for me to wear an entire outfit that I purchased from an actual store!!!  When I shop retail, I usually go in with something specific in mind.  Then I usually walk out of the store frustrated when I can't find the item!!  When I thrift, I have my wish list, but I usually just browse and pick up items that I fall in love with.  This outfit is a combination of buying something specific and picking up an item I fell in love with.

The top is from Kohl's and I purchased it a couple of years ago on clearance and the skinnies are from Macy's.  About three years ago, I had some birthday money and I told one of my friends I wanted to find a pair of pants with a little flare- not too tight, not too dressy, not too denim, not too trendy!!  She persuaded me to try Macy's.  I was very leery because frankly, I really don't like Macy's.  The way their stores are set up, frustrates me and especially when I am looking for something specific, I was sure we would never find what I had in my mind to purchase!

We walked in and my friend Katie, told the salesperson what we were looking for, but she really wasn't very helpful, so Katie and I ventured out on our own and met up within a few minutes.  I ended up taking one pair of pants to the dressing room and magically they fit perfectly!!  I couldn't believe it - that NEVER happens.  Pants are extremely hard for me to find a proper all over fit.  Usually they are too short in the legs, waist, or crotch.  They also tend to be tighter on my hips and falling off my waist - I have been blessed with a tinier waist and  bigger thighs!!  I know I'm not the only woman out there that suffers from this!!

My pants were also on sale and then we added a coupon to seal the deal!!  I haven't been back to Macy's since, but I was pleased as punch to find this sweet deal!!

My outfit comes in right around $50 from head to toe.  My sister gifted me my earrings and my mother gave me my boots.

Enjoy your Sunday!!

A Year Later

So, I've been writing this blog for a year now!!  I can't believe I posted 69 times in 2015.  That's not quite as much as I initially wanted, but that's what I was able to keep up with.

When I started this blog, I've really had no plan in what I would share.  I want to do a better job of planning entries out in 2016.  Right now, I plan to write some weekly and monthly series.  If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them.

I haven't really posted pictures and posts about my family, mainly because I don't want to post pictures of my children on my blog just yet.  Not sure what I think about my children being all over my social media.

My most read posts were my very first ones -

I loved sharing my Big 4-0 checklist of 12 things I wanted to do before turning 40 in September.  I will update you on that later this month.

I got creative with my Craft Room project this summer!!

I shared some of my thrifty finds and some of my favorite Kansas City thrift stores!!

We shall see what 2016 brings!!  Happy New Year!!
