Sunday Style - Grandma's Style

I only have one grandmother still living and I know she won't be with us much longer.  When she passes from this world, stories won't be told, memories won't be shared, and a part of who I am will go with her.  I've been told since the day I was born, that I looked like my momma.  There's really no denying it, but I come from a long line of look alikes - I look like my momma, who looks like her momma, and her momma looks like her momma.  It's easy to tell the physical likenesses, but there's lots of emotional and psychological likenesses too.  As I get older, more and more of those likeness pop up, in some of the craziest ways.  Most of the time, I embrace it.   I love feeling closer to my lineage when I hear my name linked to theirs.

My Grandma Sugar is an amazing woman.  She was born right at the start of the Great Depression, married my Grandpa at a very young, raised three children, and experience the best and worst life has to offer.  She's a lover of birds, flowers, movies, books, and her family.  She still misses my Grandpa terribly, he has been gone for almost 10 years.

The name Grandma Sugar came to be when my older brother was little.  Grandma would call him Sugar, and Shawn just thought that was her name, so Grandma became Grandma Sugar.  I think my siblings and I are the only ones who still call her Grandma Sugar.

I have always loved my Grandma's style.  Her photo albums are full of the amazing clothes she made and wore.  A few months ago, my mom brought down a dress of Grandma's.  She had made it back in the day.  Mom also brought some of the left over material, so I can make Hope a dress or skirt!!  Mom wasn't sure when she wore it, but I didn't care - she wore it, and now I get to wear it!!

The dress is simple and lovely!!  I paired it with a thrifted braided belt and wedges.  I even wore a fun pair of Grandma Sugar's earrings.

I'm not sure what Grandma Sugar would say about my blue nail polish though!!

Thanks Grandma Sugar for all ways you have enriched my life!!  I love you!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Mixing It Up

One of the trends, that I have kind of shied away from is print mixing.  I have attempted it before and it just never quite looked right, so I would change my outfit before heading out the door.  Then I finally found a combo,  I couldn't wait to try!! I wear lots of stripes and polka dots, so I decided that mixing the two patterns together would be a great place to start!!

I follow a few fashion blogs, and Jessica at WhatIWore is one of my favorites.  Her style is just classic!!  She mixes prints so effortlessly!!  I added a few more items inspired by Jessica to my clothing wish list!!

Last month, I picked up this amazing J Crew blouse at my Salvation Army Family Thrift Store.  The best part was it was new with tags and retails for $49.50!!  I've mentioned my love for J Crew before and this top is 100% classic J Crew.

I added my favorite vintage polka dot skirt, Born sandals, belt, beaded necklace, and my gorgeous fisherman's basket purse.  All of my clothing items are second hand finds!!

Total cost of my outfit was $18!  I think I'll be wearing this outfit several times this summer!!

Be Thrifty!!

Sunday Style - A Little More Pattern Mixing

I picked up this blouse at Salvation Army for $2.99.  I liked the fun pattern and the tie at the neckline.  When I got it home I noticed it was missing a button, but that was a quick and easy fix.

I added a thrifted navy and white polka dot blazer (that I got brand new!), white slacks, and thrifted heels.

Total cost of my outfit - $25!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Craft Room - Project #1 - Storage Armoire

For the last year, I've been working on creating a small craft room.  My main piece of storage for my craft room is an armoire that a friend gave to me.  It sat in my garage for about a year, before I finally pulled it out to paint it.

The armoire was part of a nursery set that was in a white finish.  I started the project, by disassembling the armoire - taking off the hardware, drawers, and backing.   I gave the wood a thorough sanding and washed it down. After letting the armoire dry, I primed and let it dry.  Next, I applied a coat of paint in a gorgeous robin egg blue color.

A friend of mine, Rachel Ropp of Revamp & Revive gave me the paint.  She has been a great resource for all my painting projects.  This paint was a mis-tint (one of Rachel's secret weapons!!)  Even though the paint was a satin, she told me that if I seal it with a polyurethane, then it doesn't matter what paint finish I used.

The original armoire had drawers at the bottom for storage.  I didn't want drawers, so I had my husband built two simple shelves out of scrap wood and I painted them a fun lime green color.  I followed the same steps as I did with the armoire.

After letting the paint thoroughly dried, I lightly sanded the armoire again, washed it down, and let it dry.  Then, I painted a second coat of paint.  Once it was completely dried, I took the belt sander and sanded the entire armoire.  This time, I roughed up the wood, by pressing the sander harder in spots and taking the paint finish down to the bare wood.  I paid attention to corners, edges, and ridges.  Next, I washed down the armoire, once again.

I love furniture that looks old and lived with.  I've rarely had a brand new piece of furniture and when I have, I dread the day that it gets its first knick or ding, so why not make it that way from the beginning!!

Then I pulled out a secret weapon - oil-based glaze in a dark chocolate brown. Applying glaze definitely has a learning curve, so I started with the doors to get the hang of it.  I found a pair of plastic gloves, a small cheap paint brush, and a few lint free rags.  Working in a small area, I brushed on a light coating of the glaze and then quickly took a rag to wipe it into and off the painted surface.  The glaze is extremely runny, so plan accordingly.  Like with the sanding, I paid attention to the corners, edges, and ridges.  I repeated this step over the entire armoire.  Glazing takes the longest time because of the two steps to the process, but the results are AMAZING!!

Glazing completely changes the look your paint.  It softens the color and ages the finish beautifully.  You can also decide how much of a glaze you want.  If I wanted to, I could have just glazed the doors and edges and not the entire surface.  I did not glaze the lime green shelves.

After all the pieces of the armoire are dry, the last step was to seal.  I close a clear polyurethane that I had on hand.  Sealing it with a polyurethane will protect your pieces from damage from unexpected bumps and spills. I put on two coats of poly, letting the armoire dry for at least 24 hours between coats.

Then I put the armoire back together again!!  Compared to all the other steps, this was a breeze!!  I replaced the wooden doorknobs with a couple of pink glass knobs I purchased at Michael's for a whooping .25 each!!  When I spotted them, I picked up several in the three color options they had and I've used them for several projects.

When I do a project like this, I try to use what I already have on hand or keep it as inexpensive as possible.  I already had some of the paint, poly, and glaze.  I was gifted the armoire and the robin egg blue paint and we used scrap wood for the shelves.  The only purchase were my two doorknobs!!

Taking on a project like this takes quite a bit of time, but I would usually get up early, put on a coat of paint and then do another, during afternoon nap.

Stayed tune for a few more Craft Room projects!! I'm already working on my next one - Organization Options.

Friday Finds

I had a few hours to myself this week and find a new loop of thrift stores in Lee's Summit!!  I first stopped in at Goodwill and picked up a couple of blouses.

$3.99
This polka dot chambray shirt is from Old Navy.

$1.99
1/2 price tag

Gap makes the best knit tops.  They keep their shape and wash up well!!  This is fun take on a staple striped shirt.  I love the pop of kelly green around the neckline and cuffs and the addition of buttons.  This top will be great to layer with this fall, but will be fun with capris or shorts this summer.

The next store I stopped at was a new one for me - Hillcrest Thrift Shop.  My neighbor had recommended several times.  This store is amazing!!  It was huge, very well organized, and the prices were wonderful!!  Each day there is a sale and the sale of the day was 1/2 price clothing!!

Gymboree Dress
.50

Shirt
$2.00

Ann Taylor Loft Skirt
$2.50

Keds Leather Shoes
$1.00

Keds are a brand that I'm always looking out for.  I've been able to find a few pairs for myself, but I usually pick them up for my kids.  These will wash up easily.  When I pick up used shoes I spray them down with Thieves spray to disinfect them or if I'm able to to, throw them in the washing machine.

Joe's Jeans
$2.50

This is my first pair of Joe's Jeans.  They cost over $150 a pair online!!  Crazy!!  These are a bit of a bootcut and had a small tear on one of the back pockets, but I thought i could put a patch under it or take a razor blade and add a few more rips and tears.

Croc Wedges
$2.00

This is my favorite find!!  I've never owned a pair of Crocs, but these are super cool!!  They are constructed of leather and cork, and are so light weight and comfortable.  My mom was quite jealous of these shoes and she looked up how much they would cost online - $69.50!!

My last stop was Red Racks.  As for as pricing goes, I think Red Racks is expensive, unless the item is on sale.  Their stores are fairly clean and organized.

Peacock Skirt
$3.24 1/2 price tag

This skirt is adorable.  I love anything peacock, so this was an easy pick.  Can't wait to wear this one!!

Happy Thrifting!!

Sunday Style - A Little Mad Men

I love a good vintage dress.  There is just something about finding a treasure from the past that is still  is amazing shape and super on-trend!!

I picked up this dress from my local Salvation Army Thrift Store for $5.99.  You can check out my other fabulous finds at fashionkc.  As I was looking through the dresses, this gorgeous print popped out at me!!  I pulled it out and I was instantly in love.  I didn't even try it on, I just knew I was taking it home.  Someone hand made this beauty!!  Last summer, I found a dress made from this same pattern, so I was confident in not trying it on.

On one of the blogs I follow, Thrift and Shout, Lindsay featured a fun way to mix prints and I thought I would take a big step out of my box and give it a whirl.

I paired my dress with a fun vintage scarf from my grandma's collection.  I hadn't been bold enough yet to wear it and Lindsay's blog really inspired me to go for it!!

I also added a pair of my grandma's rhinestone earrings and my vintage sandals to complete the look!!  I love, love, love this combination  and can't wait to try mixing patterns more this summer!!

This whole outfit came in a mere $10.98!!  I think that price sounds like what I would have paid for this outfit back in the day!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!
