Sunday Style - Christmas Cheer

I love dressing up, especially for just about any special event or holiday!!  What I love even more is being able to do so for next to nothing!!

I picked up this gorgeous Ann Taylor Christmas red skirt for just $4.99 at my local Goodwill store.  I was drawn to the bright color first, but then upon further inspection, I fell in love with the gorgeous cut outs around the hem and the POCKETS!!

I paired my skirt with my basic Talbots black sweater.  I have featured this sweater multiple times and I will probably million more.  It is such a versatile piece!!  The wind was quite fierce, so don't mind the crazy voluminous hair going on!!  I did try to curl it, but it didn't quite do what I was hoping for, but you just have to go with it some days!!

I also added my black boots, herringbone tights, vintage earrings, and a snowflake necklace.

My outfit comes under $20!!

Enjoy your Sunday and Merry Christmas!!

Kicking Something off Dad's Bucket List

My dad and brother have been Steelers fans for as long as I can remember.  As I child, my brother idolized Terry Bradshaw and every Christmas, something Steelers was under the tree for someone.

My dad has wanted to go to Heinz Field and see his beloved Steelers in their hometown for several years now.  We've all talked about it for several years, but never made any definite plans.  Finally, this year, we made it happen!!  I made my siblings pick the weekend we would travel to Pittsburgh, because their lives are a bit crazier than mine.

Game and airline tickets were purchased, hotel rooms were reserved, and that was about it!!  We had no idea what we would do with our 48 hours in Pittsburg other than watch the game.  None of us had time to plan anything other than what we did.  Until we landed, we didn't even know how we were going to get to the hotel!!

It was a perfect plan!!  Laura and just started asking people in the airport and on the plane where we should visit and eat, and we pretty much went with that!!

Laura and I flew from KCI and my dad and brother, Shawn flew from St. Louis and then met up at the hotel just a couple of blocks from the stadium.  Pittsburg pretty much tailgates the ENTIRE weekend the team is in town.  Our hotel parking lot was full of tailgaters from the time we arrived on Saturday night until we called it a night on Sunday night.

Once everyone had arrived and settled in, we headed down to hotel lobby to wait for a shuttle to take us to dinner.  The tv was tuned into the Royals playing in Toronto, but losing.  We finally started doing something and our family started cheering loudly for them.  Unbeknownst to us, the whole front two rows in front of the tv were Blue Jays fans.  They quickly turned around and gave us quite the scowling look while donning their Blue Jays t-shirts and hats.  The Royals totally won that night!!

We ate dinner at The Church Brew Works.  It was an old Catholic church that they had converted to a brewery and pizzeria.  It was amazing!!  The had kept several of the historical elements like the pews and art work.  And on the eighth day, man created beer was their motto.

Sunday morning, we ate breakfast at the hotel and then headed to Heinz Field.  I was very thankful we attended a game in October, because I don't think I could have wore or packed any more layers!!  Heinz Field is located right on the riverfront and is surrounded by gorgeous green spaces and memorabilia.  It was quite incredible to see all the fans come in on boats and from all over the country.

We were able to get some great pictures near the field, before heading up a zillion stairs to our seats.  The game with the Arizona Cardinals was back and forth and back and forth.  The Steelers quarterback Ben Rothsengber was out with an injury and Michael Vick was the second string quarterback and then he got hurt in the third quarter.  The third string quarterback, Landry Jones, came in and everyone cheered wildly for him, because Pittsburg apparently does not like Michael Vick. The crowd around us made it quite evident!!  We had a few crazy drunks around us, but we made it through without any punches or beer spilled on us!!

The last five minutes were what made the ENTIRE trip!!  Landry Jones made a short pass to Martavias Bryant and he ran it all the way down the field for a touchdown.  It felt like one of those surreal movie scenes when everything stands still and the moment feels like it will never end.  I kept cheering and screaming, looking at both my siblings, witnessing pure joy in my dad's face, and crying.  It was a memory I hope I NEVER forget.

My family has been through so much, we've put ourselves through too much, but yet, in moments like these, those things don't mean anything!!  In the last five years, I've seen such a transformation in the hearts my dad, my brother, sister, and I, that can only be by the grace of God.  I love that our family can now laugh uncontrollably, cry unashamedly, and completely enjoy each other's company.  I truly love and adore my family!!

Sunday Style - Dots on Dots

I love polka dots, what can I say!!  This outfit makes me think of June Cleaver - very classy, but I think I've given it a modern twist.

I first started out the day with this gorgeous vintage coat, I picked up at an estate sale last summer.  I love how regal I feel in this coat.  My mom had to do some work to the hem of the coat, but it was worth the work to make this coat feel and look new again.  She also mentioned she thought my great grandmother had a coat almost identical to this one!!

The three clothing pieces I've chosen are all thrifted!! I picked up the skirt this summer at Goodwill for $4.99, my Gap blouse is a fun swiss dot polka dot button up that I picked up at Maj-r Thrift for under $5, and my hot pink cardigan is from Salvation Army that I picked up on their Black Friday 1/2 price sale for just $1.49.   You can check out my other great finds here!!

My boots are and end of the season find from Sears and my necklace is an online find!!

I'm excited to wear each of these pieces year round and mixing them up with other items in my closet.

From head to toe, my outfit came in under $35!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Craft Room Project #7 - Finishing Touches

This is my last entry about my craft room!!  I hope you have enjoyed seeing how I put together this little slice of heaven on the cheap!!

To finish up my craft room, I added a few personal touches!!!

This up frame came from an old mirror that someone gave to me.  It will soon be a chalkboard, but I haven't had the time to make it yet!!  The butterflies are Salvation Army finds and cost less than $5 for all six.  There is one for each member of my family!!  A quick coat of white spray paint makes them a perfect fit for the wall!!

I picked up this cute little owl salt shaker at an estate sale and I had to find a place for him!!

A few more hints of aqua - a .99 distressed candle holder and a gorgeous blue ball mason jar

My grandmother's sewing kit

I needed an office chair for my table and I have been scouring garage sales and thrift stores for an option.  I really didn't want another project, but was willing to if the price was right.  Thankfully, I found this beauty at a neighbor's garage sale for $20 and it was brand new!!  Score!!

I picked up this little task light on clearance at Target for less than $5.  After school has been in session for awhile, they mark down all dorm essentials down by at least 30%!!

I did find two fun storage options at Ikea and have been dying to be able to use them!!

I am beyond thrilled with how this tiny space turned out and 95% of the items are repurposed!!  When I figured out how much I spent on the space - paint, furniture, organizers, etc.  I spent less than $200!!  I may go down and try to break down the cost of each item.  We'll see if it happens!!!

Time to get my craft on!!

Sunday Style - A Leopard of Many Colors

I love color!!  Usually I tend to go for one color at a time, but this dress has about every color of the rainbow in it!!

I picked it up for just $4 on an online garage sale.  I wasn't sure how short it was going to be until I tried it on.  I definitely needed to add leggings, the dress is more like a tunic on me!!

I added my gorgeous Rahab's Rope necklace (it's totally on crooked, but oh, well!!), thrifted leather jacket and hand-me-down boots.  My fleece lined leggings were a gift from my sis - love, love, love them!!

My total for this outfit from head to toe is around $35!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!!

Thrifted Style - Perfect Plaid

Plaid blanket scarves are everywhere, but I have a hard time paying over $30 on an accessory, unless it's shoes!!

I was ecstatic to to find this beautiful vintage plaid blanket scarf at my local Salvation Army for a whopping $2.49!!

This scarf is HUGE!!  I love all the colors and it will go with so many of my items in my closets!  I paired it with my chambray tunic, mustard skinnies, and boots. I did have a hard time trying to figure how to get it to lay the way I wanted, but I think it works.  I am excited to try it with a few more things in my wardrobe including dresses and sweaters.

This outfit comes in around $10!!  My scarf, tunic, and skinnies are from Salvation Army and my mom gave me her gorgeous brown Eddie Bauer leather boots that weren't working anymore!!

Be Thrifty!!

Sunday Style - It's Been Awhile

September and October have been insane!!  Between my husband and I, one of us has had event for seven weekends straight!!  We are ready for November and December to be a bit slower and then I'm really looking forward to January and February, where I like to hibernate!!

This outfit is simple and classy!!  I love to wear patterns and animal prints are trendy almost every fall and winter!!

When fall comes around, I can barely wait to pull out my boot collection!!  I have way too many and am always on the hunt for more!!

My Talbots sweater is from Salvation Army Family Thrift and I picked up this Ann Taylor skirt from Hillcrest Thrift this summer on one of my shopping sprees.  You can read what else I picked up here.  My boots are from Sears, I picked them up at the end of winter a few years ago.  My first pair of tall black boots finally wore out, so I was happy to replace them with these. My earrings were a Christmas gift from my husband.

I'm loving my short hair!!  I can do so much more to it short, then I could ever do long and in half the time.  I tried a little bit of a faux hawk and I don't think I did too bad!!

My outfit comes in at around $30 including my boots!!

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Thrifted Syle - Classic Fall

This outfit screams autumn to me!!  I could wear this outfit so many places - church, shopping, to the pumpkin patch, or on a date. I love this classic look.

Every item I am wearing is thrifted!  My boots were brand new from Salvation Army!!   My chambray tunic and mustard skinnies are also from Salvation Army.  My cardigan is from a garage sale and my best friend picked up my fun chicken bag!!  My necklace is from Rahab's Rope and my earrings are from Nickel and Suede.

I think next time I wear this outfit, I will roll my pant legs a couple of times to see if I like it any better.  Since I'm tall, the length of my pants are usually an issue for me. I've worn these pants with sandals and tucked them into tall boots, but never like this.

Tell me what you think of the length of my pants in comparison to the shaft of my boot.

Vintage Skirt Revamp

I picked up this vintage skirt at a bag sale.  I think I paid $4 for the bag and I ended up with about a dozen items, so i paid less than .50 for this beauty!!

The length of this skirt was all wrong, but I'm a sucker for polka dots!!   I compared it to one of my favorite skirts and decided that I would shorten the hem to match.

At first, I was going to take the time to measure for a new hem, cut off the excess and try my hand at "nice" hem.  Then I realized that was way too much work!!  I simply fold up the existing hem twice, iron, pin, and hem.  Sooooooo much simpler!!

I am all for revamps and if they are as simple as this, I could do them all day long!!  Once I got started, this project took only 30 minutes!!

What a difference a hem line makes!!  I also quickly moved the button at the waist band as well, so I could breathe a bit easier!!

Craft Room Project #6- Shelving and A Little More Organization

One morning, my new neighbors had thrown out a pair of shutter doors with their trash.  I immediately knew I need them for some amazing shelves!!

My husband cut them in half and I cleaned them up and touched up the edges with white paint.  I ended up with four beautiful shelves.  Then, they just sat in the garage for about nine months with no place to go!!

After painting and arranging the larger pieces of furniture, we were ready to hang them up.  I asked a neighbor, who loves woodworking if he would make me some custom brackets for my shelves.  I had looked online to see if there were any options for my 15 inch deep shelves and the prices were ridiculous!!  Grandpa Sharp agreed to my request and we were able to use lots of our scrap wood to make the them.  Double win - free and free!!

Once the brackets were made, I simply painted a couple of coats of white paint and we were good to go.  Grandpa Sharp even pre-drilled holes for us to be able to hang them with ease!!

I love, love, love how they turned out!!  The shutters simply lay on top of the brackets and we used screws that are made to hold extra weight!!

Then it was time to fill them up with all my goodies!!  I put the two smaller shelves above my Cricut cart and filled them with scrapbooking tools, photo boxes, and trinkets.

Then on the opposite wall, we hung the two larger shelves with a couple of other storage options.  This spring, I found a vintage milk crate at a garage sale for a mere $4.  It was a perfect shade of blue and I thought it would be work for my fabric.  I also found metal crate for just $1 at an estate sale, that I would work for housing my gift bags.   My shutter shelves on this wall, hold my vinyl, chalkboard tools, and sewing machine.

I couldn't be happier with the end result.  I think I did a little happy dance when I was able to see everything in its place and easily accessible!!

My last entry will be about my finishing touches - stay tuned!!!
